The B-52s were custom built for Halloween music. Their whole vibe is that of a forgotten 50s drive-in movie vaguely about beaches and surf creatures. Plus they have a slew of songs that fit on any Spooky Songs playlist, like “Rock Lobster” and “Devil In My Car”. Plus they have Fred Schneider.

Fred is best known as the over-the-top lead singer of the B-52s. His style of singing is known as sprechgesang, which is literally “speak-singing”. In Fred’s case, it usually sounds like excited shouting like “Holy cow, can you believe this!!!?” Think about “Rock Lobster” or “Love Shack”, it’s basically him grabbing you by the shoulders and shouting in your face. It’s perfect.
In interviews, Fred has said his influences were silly Halloween songs and Christmas novelties, so he’s basically my hero. Bonus is that he also shows up on Elvira’s “Bride of Frankenstein”.
So, in 1984 Fred decided to release a solo album “Fred Schneider and the Shake Society”. The lead single was “Monster”. And it’s about, yep, his wang. Or at least it sounds that way? He sings of a monster in his pants that does a naughty dance. He must have an ugly wang because as soon as he whips it out, people scream and shout.
And so the song continues. The monster does a modern dance, people hit it with a broom… but then we get the twist. It’s NOT about his ugly wang… it’s an actual monster!?
There’s a monster on the run and it wants to have have some fun /
When it flies up in the air, all the people stop and stare /
The guys give a yell and the girls start to shriek /
When they see its giant claws and it razor sharp beak
Later during the keyboard solo, someone yells “I thought dinosaurs were extinct!” So apparently he has a dinosaur in his pants. The video for the song, which is beyond bonkers, makes this explicitly clear, as the monster resembles Pterri from Pee-wee’s Playhouse.

The other B-52s show up for background vocals and appear in the video!
A great synthy addition to your playlist. Also check out “Haunt You” from the same album, which sounds like a stalker anthem. At least, it’s my stalker anthem. it actually sounds a little like “Bite the Beat” from Vanity 6. But, 90% of music sounded that way in 83-84.
